The Urinary System: Cytology, Histology, Cystoscopy, and Radiology, by Xiaoqi Lin, Longwen Chen, and Ritu Nayar is available for purchase and is geared toward an audience of Pathologists, Cytopathologists, Cytotechnologists, Radiologists, and Urologists. This book is a hardcover 172 page publication consisting of 7 informative chapters, references, and index providing the reader with a thorough guide to diagnosing and managing patients with genitourinary disease. Along with multiple peer contributors to these chapters, this atlas-style book includes more than 400 high-quality, clearly illustrated, color images with descriptive text and practical tables.

The first part of the book incorporates cystoscopic images of various urologic lesions, urine cytology, and histology of bladder biopsy specimens. Also included are cystourethroscopic and ureteroendoscopic findings which give the reader insight to the clinical component of patient management. The book continues exploring imaging of upper urinary tract lesions and biopsy of renal mass lesions. Practical tables are provided for comparison of various Immunohistochemistry tumor markers, common genomic mutations in Renal Cell Carcinoma and Pediatric Renal Malignancy. These cytogenetic and molecular studies are useful for targeted therapy for patients. The book concludes by discussing the ancillary tests for the detection of Urothelial Carcinoma such as immunology based methods (ImmunoCyt, Bladder Tumor Antigen and Nuclear Matrix Protein 22), Molecular methods (UroVysion FISH), and Promising Molecular Markers (FGFR3, TERT, STAG2, HER2(ERBB2).

Overall, this reference book is highly recommended for any physician or laboratory professional involved with managing or diagnosing patients with genitourinary disease. It is a quick and easy read containing invaluable information and images on Cystoscopy, Radiology, and diagnostic cytologic and histologic criteria of Urinary pathology. To my knowledge, there are very few reference books specifically encompassing a clinical component along with genitourinary pathology. This book would be a great addition to your reference library.

The field of genitourinary pathology is complex and often strikes a feeling of uneasiness in even the experienced pathologist.  Arriving at an accurate diagnosis can be challenging and often requires integration of clinical information, cystoscopy findings, cytology, histology and, in some cases, molecular testing.  Condensing this information into a single textbook is no easy task.  Through contributions from urologists, radiologists, and pathologists, the authors have successfully packaged this material into an easy-to-read, user-friendly textbook.  This is an atlas-style, hardback book with seven chapters and more than 300 high-quality, color illustrations with descriptive text.  The first part of the book is dedicated to cystoscopic images of urologic lesions, urine cytology, and bladder biopsies.  A unique feature is the incorporation of cystourethroscopic/ureterorendoscopic findings, an essential clinical component lacking in most genitourinary pathology textbooks.  Next, imaging of upper urinary tract lesions and biopsy interpretation of renal mass lesions are discussed.  Included in these chapters are very helpful summary tables of immunohistochemical markers used in the diagnosis of renal neoplasms, common genetic mutations in renal cell carcinomas, and common genomic mutations in pediatric renal malignancies.  The book ends with a section on ancillary tests for the detection of urothelial carcinoma, with a specific focus on fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and the other promising molecular markers. The book is well organized and uses an easy to follow, bulleted format.  Throughout the book, the authors give many practical “pearls” based on their own personal experiences, including how to avoid common pitfalls.  We highly recommend this book to anyone looking to increase their knowledge in the area of genitourinary pathology, including pathology residents and fellows, practicing pathologists, radiologists, and urologists.

Urinary System: Cytology, Histology, Cystoscopy, and Radiology is a concise, bullet-point source on bladder and renal pathology. The chapter topics are well-defined in the table of contents, boldly highlighted titles allow for quick searches while flipping through the book and the detailed index facilitates easy reference to specific entities.

Within seven chapters, the book provides an overview of clinical cystoscopic images, radiologic imaging, interpretation of urine and renal cytology, and features of histologic diagnosis. The information is organized, beginning with basic details, diagnostic key features with interspersed caveats, and has occasional diagnostic lines for those gray-zone areas. Of note, this is a 2018 publication, so the authors refer to the 2010 AJCC TNM staging (updated 2018).

Each entity includes brief differential diagnostic considerations with key ancillary studies, if indicated. The final chapter closes with a good overview of molecular testing. The variety of focused, beautiful and colorful pictures speaks volumes alongside the outline-formatted text.

Overall, Lin et al. meet their objective of providing a concise and multimodality source for urinary pathology. The combination of bulleted text and plentiful pictures make it best suited, and recommended, for beginners in urinary cytopathology and for residents in training.
